Visit the Manual RedEye online to watch the December 6, 2010, video – which will likely vanish soon – and you can see an interview with the teacher, Mrs. S.  Here’s the URL:

A student reporter, named Mr. Cox –  no kidding – kicks off the story with this:

One of the new classes offered at duPont-Manual is Mrs. S.’s Anatomy and Physiology class.  The new Anatomy and Physiology class taught by Mrs. S. was introduced to juniors and seniors at the beginning of this year.

Mrs. S. then has this to say:

When I had the idea for the course earlier last year and requested approval from the board, um, they felt that it was, parhaps, too competitive with some of the other schools’ offering health care magnet (sic).  So we had to change this a little bit and incorporate Anatomy and Physiology into the original idea of a medical course for students interested in careers in health sciences and medicine, specifically.

So what we have here is a teacher who actually cares about her students and their education.  I know, I know, she cares a little too much and her snuggle-time judgment is impaired. But she could have rolled into Manual, punched a clock every day and counted the days until retirement. I know a teacher at Manual who fits that description big time, that’s for sure.  Rest assured, no teenage boy in his right mind wants to get his freak on with her.

Back to Mrs. S.

I’m not saying that her hanging out with a teenage boy and having a few drankies is okay.  I’m just saying that this whole story is a big, fat bummer for everyone involved.  Sounds like Manual lost a good teacher with plenty of book smarts, not so much common sense and who is a total hottie.  Honestly, did you see her picture?  I’m straight and even I thought, “Wow!”  Imagine what the teenage boys with visions of MILFs thought of her.

If the kid’s family decided to press charges and the young man was screaming ‘rape’, I’d feel differently.  This is nothing compared to the bloodbaths on A&E’s The First 48 when Louisville is the featured city so let’s hope this story dies a quick death.

I wonder what the teachers union has to say about all of this.

Here’s a quote from today’s Crapola-Journal that’s pretty interesting:

The Manual RedEye, the student newspaper, briefly reported Shafer’s resignation on its website Monday. The newspaper quoted Principal Larry Wooldridge, who issued a statement to RedEye reporters: “Biology teacher Carrie Shafer has resigned from her teaching position at duPont Manual High School. The administration is in the process of working with JCPS to find a Biology Certified Substitute.”

The website reported that Wooldridge “instructed the RedEye staff to make no further report on this issue.”

Looks like the Crapola-Journal has a kindred spirit over there at the Manual RedEye.  When confronted with news that rubs the editorial board or, in this case, the principal the wrong way, tell the reporter to bury the real story.
